Following the release of FME 2015, Safe Software announced it will be deprecating approximately 325 of its supported CAD, GIS, raster, point cloud, and other data formats.

“We’re just not seeing demand for any format other than XML,” says Don Murray, President. “XML is the way of the future.”

Moving forward, Safe intends to focus its efforts solely on reading, writing, and validating XML data.

When asked about the fate of JSON data support, Dale Lutz, VP Development, jumped in.

“Of course we’ll keep supporting JSON. How else am I supposed to read sensor data from my Tesla Model S?”

“XML resistance is futile.”

And what of backwards compatibility?

“Useless,” says Murray, pausing in his work of gluing a large I heart XML poster to his office door. “If you’re not working with XML already, you should be. Maintaining compatibility with other data formats will only encourage non-XML behaviour, and that goes against my core beliefs.”

Safe’s Format Development team lead was unavailable for comment.

FME will be re-branded XME (XML Manipulation Engine) and pushed out to users the morning of April 1st, 2015.
